We love digging around and finding really interesting & intentional wines which can provide a very difference perspective and experience.

One of the interesting yet relatively un-noticed Piemontese niche we witnessed on a recent trek through this celebrated region was, the growing popularity for “other”, less previously heralded native grape varieties.

Here are four each from a highly respected vignaiolo.

2019 FERRARIS Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato “Castelletto di Montemagno” Riserva
Ruchè is an indigenous variety to the Monferrato hills of Piemonte. It has long been considered an “ugly duckling” grape—shunned by most and grossly under appreciated. We think otherwise, as its innate, highly fragrant, bordering exotic aromas—think rose petals and wild strawberry—create a completely dynamic with Mediterranean styled foods. This bottling is the first vintage for this single vineyard and is like no other red wine. Only 350 cases were produced.

2021 CAVALLOTTO Langhe Grignolino “Grign”
From one of the iconic, TOP superstars of Barolo, this aromatic and upbeat Grignolino comes from a mere 0.12 hectare parcel of their highly revered Bricco Boschis hillside of the Castiglione Falletto village. 40 year old vines grown at 950 feet in elevation. 60 case production.

2018 PAOLO CONTERNO Barbera d‘Alba “La Ginestra”
Barbera, like the other grape varieties we are tasting here, was often over the years, overlooked in favor of the Nebbiolo grape variety, not only where it was planted, but also how it was made.
Well, this “Tour de Force” rendition comes from a very well respected/ revered hillside—Ginestra and a very revered vignaiolo. Nothing secondary, wimpy or casual about this bottling.

2024 PENNA CURRADO Timorasso Derthona
We end the tasting with a stellar white wine, grown in the fossil rich soils of Tortona at 800-1000 feet in elevation. Wild yeast fermented after some skin maceration (thick skins) & submerged cap fermentation which gives depth & texture and then aged in stainless steel, clayver amphora & a touch of acacia oak. You’ll be some of the first to try this new look from Luca & Elena.
